Great Granola

I love granola. Granola sold in stores commerically often has several additives, preservatives and ingredients I cannot pronounce. It also tends to be higher in fat and sugar. I make my own granola regularly and in moderation and reasonable portions is very healthy.
Recipe (makes a lot!):

5 cups oatmeal

1 cup whole wheat flour (I have used half coconut flour before to ramp up the fiber)

1 cup wheat germ or flax meal

1 cup nonfat dried milk

1 cup oil (canola preferrably, stay away from vegetable oil)

1 cup honey

Optionals:

1 cup coconut (unsweetened flakes)

1 cup sliced almonds

1 cup sesame seeds

1 cup dried fruit

As you can see by the ingredients listed there are no preservatives but there is still some fat content (oil) and sweetner (honey). It's important to use quality ingredients for this part. And your optionals can be anything you like, but again choosing healthy fats and sweetners is important. Portion control is also important. I wouldn't recommend more than a 3/4 cup serving daily. I like to eat my granola with plain Greek yogurt and huckleberries. Yum!
