This is a summary of an article I recently read in Eating Well magazine by Rachel Johnson, Ph.D. MPH, RD.
We all know that drinking too many sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks are bad for your waistline, new research shows it may be bad for your
blood pressure as well. The journal
Hypertension reported in a study of 3,000 people that those who drank more than one serving of sugar-sweetened beverage daily had signficantly higher blood pressure than those who drank one or less daily. In 2010
Circulation, another journal, reported a study with 810 people that a reduced intake of sugar-sweetened beverages lowered blood pressure over 18 months.
The recent change in the USDA's Dietary Guidelines reflects this recommendation stating "drink water instead of sugary drinks". I couldn't agree more. Remember this also includes "diet" sodas and sweetened beverages.
